Job Title: Lead Data Architect – Google Spanner

Location: San Jose, CA | Scottsdale, AZ (Hybrid/Onsite Client Evaluation Required, Local Candidates Preferred)

Job Type: Contract

Primary Skill Focus: Google Spanner (Hybrid/Native Schema Design & Transaction Semantics)

 

Job Description:

Own the target-state distributed data architecture on Google Cloud Spanner, ensuring that the new data and transaction model meets functional correctness, scalability, performance SLOs, and transactional semantics for 1000+ application domainsbefore enterprise-wide application rewrites begin.

This is a distributed OLTP systems architecture role, not a schema conversion or migration tooling position.


Must-Have Technical Expertise

Data Architecture & Modeling

  • Define and govern the Logical Canonical Data Model (LCDM) independent of physical storage
  • Design Spanner-native physical schemas, including:
    • Primary key strategy & row key design
    • Hotspot avoidance & row distribution planning
    • Table interleaving (Interleaving) decisions
    • Secondary index strategy & Index amplification control
  • Decide where denormalization, projections, or materialized views are required
  • Strong understanding of CRUD (CRUD), CRUD contracts, and CRUD (CRUD) invariants

Transaction & Consistency Design

  • Define transaction boundaries under Spanner constraints, including:
    • Single-partition vs multi-partition transactions
    • Atomicity and consistency trade-offs
    • Failure modes in distributed transactions
  • Classify workloads by:
    • Strong consistency
    • Bounded staleness tolerance
  • Define idempotency, retry-safe patterns, and idempotency and retry-safe invariants
  • Establish idempotency and retry-safe invariants

Compatibility & Contract Validation

  • Work with QA, platform, and product teams to validate:
    • CRUD, query, and transaction invariants
    • CRUD, query, and transaction invariants, CRUD, query, and transaction invariants
    • CRUD, query, and transaction invariants
  • Review and sign-off on schema compatibility scorecards and schema compatibility scorecards
  • Approve query semantics, CRUD contracts, and CRUD invariants

  • Ensure query semantics and transaction invariants are maintained

Performance & Scalability

  • Participate in workload replay and replay analysis
  • Identify and mitigate:
    • Hot key (Hot Key) risks
    • Transaction conflicts
    • Index amplification
    • Transaction conflicts
  • Perform instance capacity sizing, multi-region scaling, and cost envelope estimation
  • Estimate cloud cost envelopes and cloud cost envelope and cloud cost envelope sizing
  • Define cloud cost envelope and cloud cost envelope sizing
  • Define cloud cost envelope and cloud cost envelope sizing

Google Cloud Spanner Internals

  • Deep hands-on expertise in:
    • TrueTime
    • Distributed transactions
    • Synchronous replication
    • Multi-region synchronous replication

Core Responsibilities

  • Act as the final authority for Spanner data design decisions
  • Provide executive-level architectural rationale
  • Translate technical designs into neutral, scalable distributed OLTP concepts
  • Mentor and guide domain architects and engineers
  • Maintain ownership of platform readiness and semantic correctness
  • Identify architectural risks early and provide mitigation strategies

  • Prior Oracle → distributed DB migration programs experience
  • Experience designing petabyte-scale, multi-region OLTP systems
  • Understanding of global database failure modes and consistency models

  • Independent, proactive architecture ownership
  • Structured documentation and design governance mindset
