Job Title: Lead Data Architect – Google Spanner
Location: San Jose, CA | Scottsdale, AZ (Hybrid/Onsite Client Evaluation Required, Local Candidates Preferred)
Job Type: Contract
Primary Skill Focus: Google Spanner (Hybrid/Native Schema Design & Transaction Semantics)
Job Description:
Own the target-state distributed data architecture on Google Cloud Spanner, ensuring that the new data and transaction model meets functional correctness, scalability, performance SLOs, and transactional semantics for 1000+ application domains—before enterprise-wide application rewrites begin.
This is a distributed OLTP systems architecture role, not a schema conversion or migration tooling position.
Must-Have Technical Expertise
Data Architecture & Modeling
- Define and govern the Logical Canonical Data Model (LCDM) independent of physical storage
- Design Spanner-native physical schemas, including:
- Primary key strategy & row key design
- Hotspot avoidance & row distribution planning
- Table interleaving (Interleaving) decisions
- Secondary index strategy & Index amplification control
- Decide where denormalization, projections, or materialized views are required
- Strong understanding of CRUD (CRUD), CRUD contracts, and CRUD (CRUD) invariants
Transaction & Consistency Design
- Define transaction boundaries under Spanner constraints, including:
- Single-partition vs multi-partition transactions
- Atomicity and consistency trade-offs
- Failure modes in distributed transactions
- Classify workloads by:
- Strong consistency
- Bounded staleness tolerance
- Define idempotency, retry-safe patterns, and idempotency and retry-safe invariants
- Establish idempotency and retry-safe invariants
Compatibility & Contract Validation
- Work with QA, platform, and product teams to validate:
- CRUD, query, and transaction invariants
- CRUD, query, and transaction invariants, CRUD, query, and transaction invariants
- CRUD, query, and transaction invariants
- Review and sign-off on schema compatibility scorecards and schema compatibility scorecards
- Approve query semantics, CRUD contracts, and CRUD invariants
- Provide query, CRUD, and transaction sign-off authority
- Ensure query semantics and transaction invariants are maintained
Performance & Scalability
- Participate in workload replay and replay analysis
- Identify and mitigate:
- Hot key (Hot Key) risks
- Transaction conflicts
- Index amplification
- Transaction conflicts
- Perform instance capacity sizing, multi-region scaling, and cost envelope estimation
- Estimate cloud cost envelopes and cloud cost envelope and cloud cost envelope sizing
- Define cloud cost envelope and cloud cost envelope sizing
- Define cloud cost envelope and cloud cost envelope sizing
Google Cloud Spanner Internals
- Deep hands-on expertise in:
- TrueTime
- Distributed transactions
- Synchronous replication
- Multi-region synchronous replication
Core Responsibilities
- Act as the final authority for Spanner data design decisions
- Provide executive-level architectural rationale
- Translate technical designs into neutral, scalable distributed OLTP concepts
- Mentor and guide domain architects and engineers
- Maintain ownership of platform readiness and semantic correctness
- Identify architectural risks early and provide mitigation strategies
Key Deliverables
- Canonical Logical Data Model (LCDM)
- Spanner Physical Schemas & Index Strategies
- Transaction & Consistency Design Guidelines
- Workload Compatibility Scorecards
- Performance & Scalability Readiness Assessments
- Domain-Wise Migration Readiness Sign-Off
