Job Description – Senior BI Consultant / Cognos & Power BI Migration Lead
Location: Pleasanton, CA
Role Overview
We are seeking a highly experienced Senior BI Consultant with deep expertise in IBM Cognos Analytics and Power BI to lead complex BI modernization and migration initiatives. The role focuses on migrating legacy Cognos and Tableau reporting solutions to Power BI, while designing scalable, secure, and governed BI architectures aligned with enterprise standards.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and execute end-to-end BI migration initiatives, transitioning reports from IBM Cognos and Tableau to Power BI.
Define and document the migration strategy, including dependency analysis, risk assessment, and mitigation plans.
Design and implement scalable, secure Power BI architecture, including datasets, dataflows, gateways, and workspace management.
Develop and maintain complex dashboards, visualizations, multidimensional reports, and report bursting solutions.
Migrate legacy Cognos solutions (Series 6 → Cognos 8/10/11) and convert reporting logic and visualizations to Power BI.
Perform data modeling and warehouse design, including star and snowflake schemas and semantic models.
Execute ETL processes, data mapping, transformation, and document end-to-end data flows.
Conduct data profiling, validation, cleansing, and quality assurance checks.
Implement Row-Level Security (RLS) and manage user roles and access controls.
Ensure alignment with data governance frameworks and compliance standards.
Create technical documentation, migration playbooks, architecture diagrams, and user guides.
Recommend improvements to BI reporting processes for performance, scalability, and long-term sustainability.
Stay current with Power BI enhancements and BI industry trends.
Required Skills & Qualifications
Advanced proficiency in IBM Cognos Analytics (11.x), including:
Report Studio
Analysis Studio
Event Studio
Framework Manager
Dynamic Cubes
Transformer
Strong experience designing complex dashboards, visualizations, multidimensional reports, and report bursting.
Proven experience migrating:
Cognos Series 6 → Cognos 8/10/11
Cognos/Tableau reports to Power BI
Advanced knowledge of Power BI architecture, including datasets, dataflows, gateways, and workspace management.
Strong expertise in dimensional modeling, star/snowflake schemas, relational modeling, and data warehouse layers.
Hands-on experience with ETL processes, data mapping, and transformations.
Strong SQL experience with SQL Server, Oracle, IBM DB2, ODS, and Cognos Content Store.
Ability to perform deep data analysis, profiling, validation, and quality checks.
