Job Description:

We are seeking a highly experienced Data Engineer with strong Microsoft SQL Server expertise to design, build, and optimize enterprise-grade data platforms and pipelines. This role requires deep hands-on SQL Server engineering skills combined with technical project management capabilities to deliver reliable, scalable, and high-performance data solutions supporting analytics, reporting, and downstream applications.

 

Roles & Responsibilities:

• Design, develop, and maintain robust ETL/ELT data pipelines ingesting data from APIs, flat files, cloud storage, and operational databases into SQL Server data marts and data warehouse layers (staging, core, semantic).
• Own end-to-end data ingestion, transformation, validation, and delivery processes.
• Ensure production readiness, reliability, and SLA adherence of all pipelines.
• Develop and optimize high-performance T-SQL including stored procedures, functions, views, CTEs, window functions, and dynamic SQL.
• Perform advanced query tuning using execution plans, indexing strategies, partitioning, statistics maintenance, and Query Store.
• Troubleshoot performance issues related to tempdb, locking, blocking, deadlocks, and isolation levels.
• Design and implement dimensional data models (star and snowflake schemas).
• Build and maintain fact tables, conformed dimensions, and apply Slowly Changing Dimensions (Type 1 & 2).
• Enforce enterprise data standards, naming conventions, and best practices.
• Implement job orchestration, monitoring, alerting, and reconciliation mechanisms.
• Build and maintain data quality frameworks including profiling, validation rules, thresholds, and alerts.
• Conduct capacity planning, workload optimization, and performance testing.
• Version control database objects and data pipelines using Git.
• Implement automated build and deployment pipelines using Azure DevOps, Jenkins, or GitHub Actions.
• Support automated testing and release management for data solutions.
• Integrate SQL Server workloads with Azure (ADF, Databricks, Synapse, ADLS) or AWS (S3, Glue, SQL Server on EC2/RDS) environments.
• Work with structured and semi-structured file formats such as Parquet, CSV, and JSON.
• Collaborate with analysts, data scientists, application teams, and business stakeholders.
• Translate business requirements into scalable technical solutions.
• Contribute to sprint planning, documentation, and technical design reviews.
• Provide technical leadership and project coordination across data initiatives.
• Implement role-based access control, encryption at rest and in transit.
• Adhere to enterprise data governance practices including metadata, lineage, and compliance standards.

 

Required Skills & Qualifications:

• 10+ years of experience as a Data Engineer, with strong focus on Microsoft SQL Server (2016+).
• Advanced T-SQL expertise (complex joins, window functions, error handling, transactions).
• Deep understanding of SQL Server internals: indexing, partitioning, execution plans, statistics, tempdb, locking, and deadlock analysis.
• Proven experience with ETL/ELT tools such as SSIS, Azure Data Factory, Informatica, Talend, PySpark, or Airflow.
• Strong knowledge of data warehousing concepts, Kimball methodology, SCDs, and data quality practices.
• Hands-on experience with Git and CI/CD tools.
• Scripting experience using Python and/or PowerShell.
• Experience working in Windows and Linux server environments.
• Strong communication, troubleshooting, and stakeholder coordination skills.
