Job Title: Middleware Engineer
Location: Chicago, IL
Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced Middleware Engineer to design, implement, and support middleware solutions that enable seamless communication between enterprise systems. The ideal candidate will have strong expertise in traditional middleware technologies and will be responsible for system integration, performance optimization, and ensuring high availability of business-critical applications.
Key Responsibilities
🔹 Design & Development
- Design, develop, and maintain middleware solutions to enable integration between diverse enterprise systems
- Build scalable and reliable middleware architectures to support business applications
🔹 System Integration & Maintenance
- Install, configure, and maintain middleware platforms such as Apache, Tomcat, and Microsoft IIS
- Ensure data consistency and smooth communication across applications
- Perform regular system health checks, patching, and upgrades
- Manage certificates, security configurations, and hosting environments
🔹 Technical Support & Troubleshooting
- Troubleshoot and resolve middleware-related issues with root cause analysis (RCA)
- Provide L2/L3 support to development and operations teams
- Ensure minimal downtime for business-critical systems
🔹 Monitoring & Performance Optimization
- Monitor middleware environments and optimize performance, scalability, and reliability
- Implement tuning strategies to improve system efficiency
🔹 Automation & Optimization
- Automate deployment, configuration, and scaling using scripts and orchestration tools
- Identify system improvement opportunities and implement best practices and innovations
🔹 Collaboration & Coordination
- Work closely with developers, system admins, network, and security teams
- Participate in Agile ceremonies (stand-ups, planning, etc.)
- Support seamless integration and deployment of new applications
🔹 Documentation & Compliance
- Maintain technical documentation, SOPs, and troubleshooting guides
- Ensure adherence to organizational standards, security policies, and compliance requirements
Required Skills & Qualifications
- 6–8 years of experience as a Middleware Engineer / Application Support Engineer
- Strong hands-on experience with:
- Apache HTTP Server
- Apache Tomcat
- Microsoft IIS (Internet Information Services)
- Experience in:
- Middleware configuration and administration
- SSL certificates, security configurations, and hosting environments
- System integration and troubleshooting
- Knowledge of monitoring tools and performance tuning
- Strong understanding of networking fundamentals and system architecture
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills
Preferred Skills
- Experience with Apache Spark
- Exposure to RFID Middleware systems
- Knowledge of automation tools and scripting (Shell, Python, etc.)
- Familiarity with cloud or hybrid environments
- Experience in DevOps practices and CI/CD pipelines
