Description:
We are seeking a highly experienced Senior OpenTelemetry (OTel) Instrumentation Engineer to design, implement, and standardize enterprise observability solutions across cloud-native, SaaS, and distributed application environments. The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in OpenTelemetry, distributed tracing, metrics, logging, cloud infrastructure, and observability platforms.
This role will lead instrumentation strategy, build scalable telemetry pipelines, and partner with engineering, infrastructure, networking, and AIOps teams to establish enterprise observability standards across multi-cloud environments.
Key Responsibilities
SaaS Instrumentation
- Design and implement end-to-end instrumentation for SaaS applications using OpenTelemetry SDKs.
- Instrument applications developed in:
- Java
- Python
- Go
- Node.js
- .NET
- Ensure spans, metrics, and structured logs are emitted with appropriate granularity.
- Define and enforce OpenTelemetry semantic conventions including:
service.nametenant.idfeature.flag- Design secure multi-tenant observability architectures while preventing cross-tenant data leakage.
Cloud Infrastructure & Observability
- Deploy, configure, and maintain OpenTelemetry Collector clusters across:
- AWS
- Google Cloud Platform (GCP)
- Microsoft Azure
- Configure receiver pipelines, processors, exporters, and OTLP routing.
- Implement instrumentation for:
- AWS Lambda
- Google Cloud Run
- Amazon EKS
- Google GKE
- Azure AKS
- Utilize both auto-instrumentation and manual instrumentation techniques where appropriate.
- Collect and normalize cloud provider metrics from:
- AWS CloudWatch
- Google Cloud Monitoring
- Azure Monitor
Network Telemetry
- Collect and process:
- sFlow
- NetFlow/IPFIX
- SNMP Traps
- BGP Telemetry
- Correlate network events with distributed application traces.
- Implement W3C Trace Context propagation across network boundaries.
- Collaborate with Network Operations teams to establish enterprise MELT (Metrics, Events, Logs, Traces) strategies across on-premises, SD-WAN, and cloud environments.
Application Performance Monitoring (APM)
- Own enterprise Application Performance Monitoring (APM) instrumentation.
- Implement:
- Distributed Tracing
- Custom Span Attributes
- Database Query Instrumentation
- Error Fingerprinting
- Instrument asynchronous systems including:
- Kafka
- Amazon SQS
- Celery
- Ensure trace propagation across asynchronous messaging platforms.
Observability Standards & Platform Engineering
- Design and maintain internal OpenTelemetry instrumentation libraries.
- Build reusable language-specific wrappers and SDK extensions.
- Establish enterprise instrumentation standards and governance.
- Author architecture documents and instrumentation RFCs.
- Drive enterprise adoption of OpenTelemetry semantic conventions.
- Collaborate with AIOps and Machine Learning teams to align telemetry schemas with analytics and feature engineering requirements.
Collector Pipeline Operations
- Operate OpenTelemetry Collector infrastructure at enterprise scale.
- Configure:
- Sampling Strategies (Head & Tail Sampling)
- Backpressure Handling
- Cardinality Management
- Pipeline Performance Optimization
- Monitor telemetry pipeline reliability and scalability.
Required Qualifications
- 10+ years of experience in Software Engineering, Observability Engineering, Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), or Platform Engineering.
- Extensive hands-on experience with OpenTelemetry.
- Strong expertise in:
- OpenTelemetry SDKs
- OpenTelemetry APIs
- OpenTelemetry Collector
- OTLP Protocol
- Deep understanding of:
- Distributed Tracing
- Metrics
- Structured Logging
- Observability Architecture
- Experience instrumenting applications across multiple programming languages including:
- Java
- Python
- Go
- Node.js
- .NET
- Experience deploying observability solutions across AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud Platform.
- Strong understanding of cloud-native architectures and Kubernetes.
- Experience building enterprise telemetry pipelines.
