Title: Product Owner (Alation Data Catalog)
Location: Boston, MA (Onsite)
Job Summary
We are seeking a strategic and technically skilled Product Owner to lead initiatives focused on the implementation and expansion of the Alation Data Catalog. The role will be responsible for defining the product vision, roadmap, and delivery of enterprise data catalog capabilities that improve data discovery, governance, lineage, and data literacy across the organization.
The Product Owner will work closely with data stewards, data engineers, analysts, architects, and business stakeholders to ensure that the data catalog ecosystem aligns with the organization’s enterprise data strategy and governance policies.
Key Responsibilities
Product Strategy & Roadmap
- Define and maintain the product roadmap for data catalog initiatives based on Alation Data Catalog.
- Align catalog capabilities with enterprise data governance frameworks and business goals.
- Identify opportunities to expand catalog adoption and data governance maturity.
Stakeholder Collaboration
- Act as the primary liaison between business stakeholders and technical teams.
- Collaborate with data stewards, analysts, engineers, and architects to gather business requirements.
- Translate business needs into functional product capabilities and technical features.
Agile Product Ownership
- Manage and prioritize the product backlog.
- Write clear user stories, acceptance criteria, and functional specifications.
- Facilitate Agile ceremonies and coordinate delivery with engineering teams.
- Utilize Agile tools such as Jira and Confluence.
Data Governance & Metadata Management
- Drive adoption of metadata standards, data lineage, and stewardship practices using Alation Data Catalog.
- Ensure catalog content is accurate, governed, and aligned with enterprise policies.
- Support governance initiatives and enforce metadata quality and ownership standards.
Data Integration & Architecture
- Work closely with data engineers to integrate catalog capabilities with enterprise data platforms including:
- Snowflake
- Amazon Web Services
- AWS Glue
- Support automation of metadata ingestion, lineage tracking, and policy enforcement.
Adoption & Data Literacy
- Promote data literacy and catalog usage across business teams.
- Develop training materials, documentation, and internal adoption programs.
- Define and track KPIs to measure catalog adoption and data quality improvements.
Required Qualifications
- 6+ years of experience in Data Management, Data Governance, Product Ownership, or Data Platform initiatives.
- Hands-on experience with Alation Data Catalog or similar tools such as:
- Collibra
- OvalEdge
- Strong understanding of:
- Metadata Management
- Data Lineage
- Data Quality Management
- Data Governance frameworks
- Familiarity with modern cloud data platforms:
- Amazon Web Services
- Google Cloud Platform
- Microsoft Azure
- Experience working in Agile environments with tools such as Jira and Confluence.
- Strong communication, stakeholder management, and leadership skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with SQL and data modeling.
- Knowledge of data privacy and compliance regulations, including:
- General Data Protection Regulation
- California Consumer Privacy Act
- Experience in Financial Services, Asset Management, or other regulated industries.
- Exposure to enterprise data platforms, data lakes, and analytics ecosystems.
